During 2009 Tshwaraganang Hydroponics embarked on a research and development program. Mr Mabotsa realized that if the company wants to stay competitive, it will need to look at diversifying the product lines it can produce. About 40 tomato, 15 sweet pepper and 2 egg plant varieties were evaluated. Some of the tomato varieties yielded up to 30kg tomatoes per square meter. These varieties were sourced with the assistance of Dr Petrus Langenhoven (ASNAPP). About 90% of the varieties evaluated has not been grown in South Africa before. Mr Mabotsa realized that the because they are a small business they will have to look at niche products to make them competitive with the bigger commercial farms.
